WD Scorpio hard drive defect - mp3 sound recorded (see link)

February 11th, 2016, 17:42

Hello,

I have a harddrive which became defective, I recorded the sound and wondered what could be defective.
I also have a spare drive, which is exactly the same type, which I can used for spare parts.

The mp3 file can be downloaded at : http://we.tl/izqwxmGSqO (287 KB) (tried to upload the file to this forum, but mp3 files are not allowed)

It makes a sort of repeating sound for three times and then the drive stops. Attached the drive directly to my pc power supply and sata.

The type of the hard drive is :

WD1600BEVS-22RST0 - WD Scorpio 160GB 2.5 5400 Sata HDD

Before opening the drive, I would like to hear your opinion, about what could be defective. Maybe you want to listen and help me.
And, can it be repaired by using the spare drive ?

Thanks a lot,

Ed

I haven't downloaded the MP3 but if it clicks and spins down, then it's a physical issue. The heads will be bad, and almost certainly some firmware and/or media damage.

Sorry to say that it 99% likely you will fail if you try DIY on this drive, and render future recovery much mkre difficult and expensive or quite possibly irrecoverable.

You need to seek pro assistance on this if the data is important, as they will have the appropriate cleanroom, parts, firmware tools, hardware cloning equipment and skillset to deal with this. None of this, with respect, you have :-(

We can take a look if you wish to send to UK :-)

DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE!!!!!!

"IT" can't do the job, but with the right pair of hands attached to the right head it can assist!

In as much as a garage full of top-notch auto tools and diagnosis equipment wouldn't make me a car mechanic. :-)

Of course I understand, that it will not do the job for you ;-)

I do a lot of microsoldering on PCB's, and I am very handy with lots of things.

First I am going to do a test with old working hdd's, just to see when they fail, when they are open.

Fair enough!

If you're determined to DIY this, then the thing to do is to get two identical drives (without any important data on) and switch the heads between them and then if they still work run a surface scan, see how that goes :-)

Good luck!
