WD20NMVW-11AV3201

March 7th, 2016, 9:31

Hello,
The customer bring me the drive above with "Slow responding + dead head 2,5"
The partition open in recovery software but with bunch of bad sectors because of H 2 and 5.

After replacing heads with matched donor, heads 2 and 5 back intact now. But when I tried to open the partition it shows nothing and I am trying to scan the entire drive now.

Very weird, why after replacing heads the partition become inaccessible?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Possible other heads are now NOT compatible or something trivial is being overlooked.

You mean donor heads are not compatible?
But the drive is working now, even head 2 and 5 are intact. Surface test is almost fine too.

Any suggestions?

what tool you use to rectify slow problem ?
can you show us sector 0, 63 & 2048 ?

what i have understand that after swapping heads you are trying to access data through windows ?

I am not in the office now. So, I can't upload sector 0,63 and 2048.
I already imaged the patient to a functional drive.

Yes, meant in the previous post heads other than #2 and #5 from the donor head assembly.
Not sure what "drive is working now" mean. Could mean many things.

If surface test on all heads is fine, then all seems fine.

So, something else is going on.

If I understand you correct, you have a full sector-sector clone of the drive.
If so, it could be just a lost partiotion, scan with R-Studio and see.
If not, the drive maby has encryption on it...either as a Wd external or by client SW.

could it be translators also ?

Re: WD20NMVW-11AV3201

First, thanks for replies.
It's not a translator issue I believe.
After scanning the entire drive with r-studio shows the folders with correct names empty and a lot of extra found files with correct name and capacity but not working.
I think data has been shifted.

Any suggestions please?

data is definitely shifted
each sector you have uploaded (0, 63 & 2048) has 516B instead of 512B
you have extra 4 bytes @ the beginning (0x04 0x02 0x00 0x00)
(how can it be ?)

how you apply the slow fix ? did you manually patch MOD 02 ??
i would check by writing back the original MOD 02 without slow-fix.

I applied slow fix from MRT.

did you backup MOD 02 ?
if yes, write it back and see if you get correct geometry of the drive e.g 512b per sectors.

I'm presuming you're using MRT to clone?

If so, post those same sectors read directly in the WD utility and not from the cloned copy.

Have heard things about the MRT "data extractor type tool" causing issues.

Thanks for replies friends.
Special thanks to Mr. Jermy he was trying to help me at this issue from 3:00 PM to 10:30 PM :)
@ Mr. Sean: I will post those sectors again from WD utility tomorrow when I get to the office.
Thank you very much.

sector 0, MBR is missing the signature.

sector 2048: NTFS boot sector appears to be normal corresponds to a partition size:
0xE8DF7FFF = 3906961407 Sectors = 1863GB, correct 512b per sector, type NTFS.

as Sean said it could be another MRT bug.

BTW, if you connect original drive does it show the partition ?
