2TB HDD freezing Windows Explorer and will not mount on OSX

March 8th, 2016, 13:20

I have a 2 TB Western Digital external hard drive that started acting up where I could not write to or read from the drive. It sat for about a month and I didn't touch it then I fired it up and was getting access denied messages when trying to access files. I went to set permissions but since it's 2 TB I just let it go overnight and when I woke up it had been stuck and would not complete the applying of permissions.

Now when I plug the hard drive in and go to Computer, the progress bar at the top of Windows Explorer is green but gets stuck at about 95% and never really "discovers" the drive. If I try to open the drive to view it's files, Windows Explorer freezes completely. I have tried plugging this in on a Windows 7, Windows 10 and OS X Yosemite machine. Yosemite would show the drive but would not mount.

I took the HDD out of the external enclosure and put it in my PC as an internal drive just using the SATA and power from my motherboard. My PC would not even boot!!

chkdsk just sits, it won't run.

Any ideas?

could be a typical slow-responding problem of WD.

if you are not comfortable doing so, better send it to someone with proper tools and knowledge, it could be still a simple imaging recovery at this stage.

good luck
