Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 Clicking 11 times

April 2nd, 2016, 23:43

Hi, I know a lot has been said that its a dead drive but i am looking at recovering it myself.... and yes I have looked around first but everything that i have read so far only has people asking the question , and not necessarily the process or the outcome.

Currently I work as a aviation technician in the Australian Military where i have access to repair PCB's etc but software wise i have been out of the IT for 10-12 years now , so i basically need help diagnosing a fault software side.

If the PCB can be repaired or firmware flash required , i can do that but if its a mechanical fault i am happy to say its truly dead. Problem is that the HDD was the main HDD for the family PC and I'm currently typing this off a macbook air (which i hate and have issues using). A little about the fault so far:

There were no obvious signs of degration (no random clicks, slow transfer etc) The HDD is about 3-4 years old and always kept in the PC clean. Came home to find the PC won't turn on with no boot device and the audible clicking sound of death. A little reading into it , my HDD clicks 11 times powering up then powers down. have tried to change SATA cables.

SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.12
ST31000524AS
FIRMWARE : JC4B
PCB: 100574451 REV B

Can anyone suggest test's that i can carry out to help diagnose the fault

Thanks in Advance
