Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello all,
We've had HP computers in before using WinMagic / Securdoc. Successful decryption has been based around locating the WinMagicSECURDOC.WMG file on a non-encrypted partition, then using the various HP provided software to allow for decryption.
At the moment a HDD is being worked on. It was heavily degraded, but imaged quite well. However, in this case the WinMagicSECURDOC.WMG does not appear to be present on the HDD. Moreover, the owner of the HDD tried various command lines to try and repair the computer. Including creating a new (unencrypted) MBR on the main partition and making changes to the BCD.
Has anyone had experience of dealing with the HP WinMagic / Securdoc encryption when it is not possible to use the SDWmgRecovery and SDRecovery Plugin combo?
I hear that the most recent version of Encase does provide some WinMagic support. Again, has anyone had any experience of using it in such circumstances?
Support on the HP website is abysmal for the encryption they provide.
Thanks for any suggestions,
John
