As ide hard drives in big sizes are hard to come by and are unavailable in sizes over 750gb would it be possible to get a large sata drive and put an ide pcb on it?
I guess it is not going to happen but it would be cool.
I ask as sata to ide converters do not work well with the original xbox console and if I could mix and match parts from a new drive with an old ide pcb and create a Franken Monster 2tb ide hdd to use in my xbox.
It is something a lot of xbox owners would be interested in.
has any one attempted such a feat ?

I have looked at the WD drives about creating a drive in excess of 500gb with a PCB swap and in theory it looks like the biggest drive you could make in native ide I think would be 4tb from a bit of investigation.
The WD Caviar Blue (WD5000AAKB) is the biggest drive available in ide but the SATA drive's in the same platform went all the way up to 3tb in the wd red drives, 2tb in the inteli green drives and 1tb in the blue and I think 4tb in the green drives.
I believe the wd30efrx is the same platform and is a 3tb WD red drive.
I believe the wd10ealx is the same platform and is a 1tb WD blue drive.
I believe think the wd40ezrx is the same but I'm not too sure this is a 4tb green drive
Would any one be willing to attempt this if so how much would you think it would cost?

It was possible for old WD drives SATA>IDE & IDE>SATA pcb adaptation.

I think biggest drive which you can get by conversion sata to ide is 1TB. Last ide drives were sata with sata to ide bridge on board, so I don't see why you can't find good external sata to ide converter.

I would just try one of these for what you want to accomplish:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SATA-to-IDE-Ada ... Sw2x1XMJacIt'll handle any size drive, and I know it works well as it's what we all use on our PC-3000's to work on drives.

Sata to ide converters add delay to the init of the system and the xbox throws kernel errors and they are hit and miss weather they work or not between models chipset and revision of the sata to ide converter.
The problem is you cant alter the bios easily as because of the watch dog timer in the smc.
The 2nd stage boot loader processes a crypto challenge to send across the i2c bus to the SMC If the SMC does not get a reply in a timely manor it throws a panic and the smc resets the xbox so you cant add delay to the bootloader to give time for the hdd to init to combat SMC reset.
