Samsung HD203WI Not reconized.

June 2nd, 2016, 8:26

Hello everyone, I have a Samsung 2TB HDD HD203WI that is no longer recognized or on my laptop or on my desktop PC. Even with the Computer menu / Manage / Disk Management Win7 no longer see it. Originally the drive was recognized as RAW then making manipulations with TestDisk now I do not see him. There are other tools such as, SeaTools Seagate or Samsung or HDDScan HUTIL and others but which could get me out of this problem?
Thank you in advance.
Regards.
Vincent.
PS: I've a second one same size and same PCB I try to swap the PCB from one to the other but the problem still the same !!!

Yes, I'm using USB on my laptop, on the PC Desk I put it into the SATA connector.

Does the drive appear in BIOS?

Hi all, I'm back, I try to connect the HDD to my desktop after power down I connect the disk and reboot the machine, on the BIOS I saw the both HDDs connected to but during POST I get a message from the second one as SMART error "command error" then I skip this and Win7 freeze.
After some other trail in the Bios my HDD burn, suddenly when I was disconnecting the SATA cable the STJ009 blow-up, I try to remove the power but too late ! This device is a power P-mos Fet transistor involved into the the -5V for the pre-amp inside HDA. Now I've two solution in front of me, the first one is to replace the PMos-Fet by a new one, but I'm not sure that the problem disappear (if the pre-amp is dead), the second one is to use my second PCB from my second HDD (the same with it working perfectly at this time) !!! Then I'm not sure by swapping PCB that the device would be recognize if for any reason the MBR is destroyed or incorrect ? Not easy to solve :?

Be aware that if the preamp is shorted, then it may damage a replacement PCB.

Were any of the TVS diodes or zero-ohm resistors damaged?

No apparently no more devices around looks damaged, I've ordered the new P-MosFet I'll receive it in 7 to 10 days, in between I'm thinking to do a platters swap, I've access to a clean room (Wafer Fab class) but not sure if it's easy to do and finally if it's working, what's your opinion ? :?:

I've seen other cases where people have changed the damaged chip, only to find that the new one burns up again. :-(

Maybe possible, without any information from the Pre-Amp it's difficult to analyse, is there some where documentation concerning repair / Replacement of the Pre-Amp ?

It seems impossible to exchange the preamp !!! Because this one is so close from the HSA ...

Solution would be to exchange platter from the same type of HDD but is there a good tuto for that ?

lol as you are jumping fast ... your word shows , you have good knowledge and you are just kidding .its my guess , correct me if i am wrong :)

Ha! Ha! No in fact I'm looking on the web for the best solution and now it looks more clear for me.
1 - By exchanging the PCB from one know good to the fail one is "risky"
2 - Replace the PMos failing on the PCB could not solve the problem (Blow Up again ?).
3 - Exchange the PreAmp Head need a good experience and tools.
4 - Swapping the platter from Fail to Know Good, probably the best solution but I need more infos
to try to succeed on getting back my Data (Around 1Go !)
Any idea are welcome !

DO NOT SWAP PLATTERS!

"All" it needs is a replacement heads assembly, which the preamp is a part of.

Measure these components:

Here are photos of your PCB:

With the PCB on and off the drive, measure the resistance between ground and the anode (RHS) of the diode to the right of the STJ009 IC. This will tell us if the preamp is shorted on the -5V side.

Nobody swaps platters if problem in preamp (except some "special" models like n40p). Nobody changes preamp too if problem in preamp (except "special" models like Viper), but it's possible for your samsung. First of all you need to find out what is main problem. It's look like it was problem with system modules or errors. If preamp is dead you need change heads, solve problem with modules and read data.

Thanks fzabkar for the snaps, I'll check components. drHDD thanks too you're right I need to find the main reason for PFet destryed, if that's head I would prefer to swap platter. I let you know.
Regards.
