Hi
I have an unusal requirement.
One of customer was having Seagate 2 TB drives in Raid 1 , due to unknown reasons both are not detecting.
Fortunately customer has taken backup. He has asked me whether I could Make one of them working.

Why trust on a drive that already failed? Are they still under warranty?

As pcLab states, you're crazy trying to reuse an already failed drive. Just buy a new one.
That having been said, drive #2 is just a media cache issue. It's an easy enough fix using any pro data recovery tools like PC-3000. If you read system file 93 and post it, someone here could probably modify it for you so you can write it back to disable the media cache.
However at the root of the issue is usually bad sectors which aren't going to just magically go away. There's always a reason behind the firmware glitch.

Hi all
Thanks for suggestions.
However not everyone is having mission critical data. Large no. of computer users are home users / students etc.
This user group is having data with no need of reliability whatsoever.
What a college going teen store on a home pc ? songs and movies .
Pls. note disk refurbishing is billion dollor industry . No manufacturer gives brand new retail hard disk as replacement, They always give refurbed one.
By refurnishing I will also earn something and client will also get additional drive for non critical stotage. Also not all hard disks are having critical issue.
One of the disk is giving full sector access and is behaving like normal disk.

Customer is a sophisticated guy and he know everything. He just want to make use of hard disk instead of lying around and adding E-waste Besides one hard disk is not used much and is in healthy condition.Refurbishing is best practical way while dealing with this disk

Re-purpose as part to fix another Seagate with the same specifications. There is always a customer is the price is right.

Data is never mission critical until the hdd fails. Then , somehow, magically, that data becomes valuable. And the poor soul who said the disk could be used will be blamed.

actually this issue has CAP as main reason - ( Continental Attitude Problem)
those opposing refurbishing represent consumeristic European / American attitude where they are fond of throwing everything.
This is because of there lifestyle and attitude .
Terminator2 must be from ASIA particularly from India .
Here we do not throw anything because it is outdated and even damaged, this rule is applicable to rich and poor and multimillions too. So we don't throw anything at all we do all R & D , repair and anything possible to reuse it. Because it is lifestyle and attitude of that country.
We call it JUGAD. Its so common that if you say you are throwing something which can be reused people will call you mad.

Actually, if the OP filled correctly his profile data, he is in Australia.
Also, no problem in reusing things that can fail without making you lose something non-replaceable ( a car, refrigerator, radio, etc ) .
With the hard disks, it is not a question of not minding the waste. Even if the customer promises in the name of his preferred deity that will just use the drive to store unimportant data, when said drive fails again, they will come back wanting the drive fixed or the data recovered ( probably for free or a very low fee ) .
And if you say then that it cannot be done, or will cost a lot, that customer will start spreading to others that you are not a good professional, or wants to charge a lot for things that should be in warranty, etc. And very conveniently he will forget the part about when you advised him against using that drive, or that he himself promised you that he would just use it to store some trash files of no importance.

reliability statistics of hard drives are changing continuously.
I was not aware that HGST and hitachi are different companies.
Hitachi was most reliable but since it is been taken over by wd its reliability will be in question now.
seagate / samsung is out of reliability since long back
WD being american company will lack japanese reliability
So Toshiba may emerge as more trustworthy brand.
I have heard that some toshiba drives are manufactured in wd factories
Now which brand to trust
