Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Imagine my excitement this week when an external HDD came in branded as Maxtor and the prospect that I would have to do a 'left-handed' headswap, only to my have hopes (rather predictably) dashed to find that it was a Samsung M8

Can anyone give a plausible reason why after all these years Seagate are once again producing Maxtor branded external HDDs? Is Seagate hoping for consumers to make a purchase based on nostalgia? What next, the Quantum Fireball Barracuda?

Perhaps Seagate wants to distance themselves from the Samsung brand, while maintaining a "cheap" brand of drive that may arguably be considerably more reliable than the Seagate brand.

I wonder if Seagate would ever again put a Seagate drive in a Maxtor box.

That is looking very much like the recent Samsung products that have been on the market.
They are just changing the brand to Maxtor I guess.

Yes, not worth taking a photo of, as per the link on the Seagate/Maxtor website. It's an exact copy of the Samsung M3 portable case but now re-branded as Maxtor. Inside is a ST1000LM025. I expect they will do the same with M9 series too. Just not sure why they are bothering!
