USB 2TB Seagate - Error - Unable to lock source device.

October 17th, 2016, 21:37

For the life of me I cannot get this error to go away when trying to run the HDD Raw Copy Tool.

The error reads "Unable to lock source device. Make sure you do not have open files on this device and try again."

I have also used 'Handle' and 'Process Explorer' from sysInternals to see what may be open or being referenced on the drive, but no luck.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have two of these drives. One has bad sectors and I am trying to copy the data from the drive with the bad sectors to the other drive and skip the bad sectors.

Thanks and Regards,
gregw

I think it's a Windows 10 issue. I haven't been able to make it work lately on some of my systems.

Try using R-Studio (even just a demo) to do the binary copy. That generally still works fine for healthy drives. Or for the bad sector one use ddrescue in Linux.
