Hard drive with strange readings (MFT lost)

January 6th, 2017, 10:30

Hey guys,

New to this forum and am rather desperate, I tried everything I could find to try and restore this drive. sadly nothing works.

The testdisk readings are strange and I was wondering if anyone came across these (attached picture)

No partition is found even in deep scan, and file recovery gives fragmented meta data on the files themselves.

Would appreciate any advise on how I could go forward rather than just chucking the plastic and keeping the neodymium magnets for funzies.

thanks.

Please, give more information.
What is the brand and model of the hard disk, and how the problems started ?

Was it in an USB enclosure, or was it inside a computer ?

Thanks for the reply,

The hard drive was an external Western digital elements 1TB, I have taken it out of the enclosure and hooked up to my PC. running testdisk.

I'm also attaching a snip of photorec so you could see how strange the size looks like.

As far as how the problems have started, I honestly don't know as it isn't my HDD.

Try using Dmde to check the partition table information. It is somewhat easier to use.
In case you hadn't already I would suggest you mount the drive connected to a sata interface on a pc motherboard.

Well, what was the behavior before you took it out of the enclosure ? What made you decide to do that ?

Please, post pics of the board, and also the top side of the drive with the labels.

Also, this drive may be using 4k aligned partitions, and when you connected it to the pc, it tries to use 512 ones.

You can try also the demo version of R-Studio to see it it finds something.
