WD my book studio edition II - problem with pcb

January 14th, 2017, 7:46

Hello,

I have external disk WD my book studio edition II (wd20000h2q-00). So problem is with PCB becuase after connecting any disks diodes shining on the PCB, computer recognizes new device but disks don't spin. So after connecting disks 3,5" any disks don't spins, but disk 2,5" spins but computer don't see any disks. I attached some photos this PCB P/n 4060-705019-002 rev.2.

So I mesured voltage on the power sata ports on the pcb. So on the 15-13 pins I have 12V, 9-7 pins is 5V but on pins 1-3 I have 0V. On the pins 1-3 there should be 3,3V but is 0.

Could you help me what I should check becuase I would like to try repair this pcb?

thanks
Marcin

The +3.3V rail should not be necessary.

Check that Staggered Spinup (pin #11) is grounded. Note that WD drives can be configured to ignore this pin. Also check whether PUIS (Power Up In Standby) is enabled.

How does your host PC identify the bridge PCB?

Thank you for your answer.

So Pin 11 is not graunded.

Bridge is showing in device manager as "WD My Book device". I attached screen and log about this device.

If pin #11 is not hardwired to ground on the PCB, then it should be driven to ground by the bridge IC whenever it needs to spin up the drive. Alternatively, the bridge could be controlling the power sequencing via PUIS (ATA Set Features command).

AISI, an intelligent bridge would not spin up both drives at the same time. Doing so would stress the power supply. A third method of power control is via the AO4613 dual MOSFETs near each SATA connector. These switch the +12V and +5V power rails.

It doesn't appear that there is anything amiss with any of the onboard power supplies, but I have attached some test points and datasheets.

@lasek, in the interest of completeness, could you tell us the markings on the following components?

    U4/U8 - buck regulator
    D4/D1 - Schottky diode
    U1 - bridge
    Q17 - P-ch MOSFET
    D3 - diode
    Q12 - general purpose BJT

Could you also measure the voltages on U3 (AE marking)?

What is the function of SW1? Is it a "soft" power on/off switch?

fzabkar I attached picture this component. Voltage on U3 I wrote on the picture( 5V and 12V). SW1 is on/off switch and changing some function.

U3 appears to be a 5V linear regulator.

D6, Q17/Q18, D3, and Q12/13 appear to constitute a high current linear regulator. D3 is a 2.5V precision reference. The output voltage is given by ...

    Vout = 2.5 (1 + R123/R124)

    R123 = "25C" = 17.8Kohm

Some external drives won't spin up until they detect a USB host. Could that be your problem?

I did some measurment some components. If I connect 2,5" disks then its spins but they are not recoginized in system and pcb board. 3,5" disk are not spin. In WD raid manger pcb is recognized with correct serial number but don't see any disk.

I have another idea. I see on the internet power supplier from this model and it look different then my. Original power supplier have 12V and 3A but my have 12V, 1,4A.

It could be a problem?

Re: WD my book studio edition II - problem with pcb

I replaced power supplier and disks 3,5" start spinning but still are not recognized in Windows.

Your measurements suggest that my analysis of the Q17/Q18/D3 circuit is seriously flawed. :-(

In any case your PCB appears to be OK. It would be interesting to know the voltages at the Vout and Vin test points in the other photo clips, just for the benefit of others.

Have you tested each of the drives in another machine? A SMART report (eg CrystalDiskInfo) would be useful. I would also examine sector 0 of each drive with a disc editor, eg DMDE.

I think your power supply is wrong and maybe too weak.

What is written in the device chassis/manual about the power supply specifications ?

Or, can you find some 12V 3A ( or 4A ) power supply and test ?

Re: WD my book studio edition II - problem with pcb

I find another power supplier 12V 3A and then disks 3,5 start sipn but still not recognized by OS. I tested device with good hdd, and smart is ok. I attached another my measure that you ask me fzabkar.

Were the disks you tested the unit with formatted or blank ? Does the computer lets you initialize them ?

What is written in the enclosure about the power supply specifications ?

Re: WD my book studio edition II - problem with pcb

Switcher_1 appears to be a +1.2V Vcore supply for the bridge.

Switcher_2 appears to be the +5V supply for the HDDs.

U7 most probably supplies +3.3V to the bridge (Vio?), Firewire chip, and flash memory.

I don't understand the function of U6. If I have correctly identified the chip, then its Adj(ust) pin should be sitting at a reference voltage of 1.25V, not 0.68V. ???

That said, ISTM that the PCB is working.

Re: WD my book studio edition II - problem with pcb

fzabkar wrote:If I have correctly identified the chip, then its Adj(ust) pin should be sitting at a reference voltage of 1.25V, not 0.68V. ???

Oops, the reference voltage is measured between Vout and Adj.

    1.9V - 0.68V = 1.22V

Therefore +1.9V appears to be correct. Maybe this is the Vio for the bridge, not 3.3V?
