WD My Book PCB for 4061-705149-a00 rev ab Help

January 27th, 2017, 11:03

I have about 15 years of backups on a WD My Book and I'm at the end of my rope trying to recover.

From what I've been able to do on my own, the drive itself is fine and it's probably encryption on the SATA to USB bridge that I need to get past. I haven't been able to find any 4061-705149-a00 rev ab boards online and the only one on eBay is listed at $500. I just don't have that kind of cash.

I did manage to get a 4061-705210-a00 rev ab donor board and when I use that I get the "Initialize" prompt, so some progress there.

The original pcb looks like it has a power issue. Nothing happens when I plug in the power supply, but I've been over the board but I can't find any obvious shorts or over current.

Can anyone help with the best way to proceed?

Here's a picture of the boards. I'm willing to test pins or traces on them, but I don't know the layout.

What's the text on U1 say?

First ddrescue the drive to a new one. Then try using reallymine to decrypt it.

The drive was formatted HFS+. Will that make a difference when using reallymine?

Most of my data was on encrypted sparse image files. I have the passwords for the sparse images, but I don't know if data recovery tools can identify sparse image files.

@sailense, can you measure the voltages at V1, V2, and V3?

Also, can you identify the markings on U1, U2, and U3?

@JGAN @spildit I'll try that. I have a partial backup on a 2nd 4TB with everything but my sparse images so I'll need to move some stuff around to free up enough for the image.

@fzabkar I'll need my work multimeter so I'll get that done over the next couple of days and report back.

Thanks guys :)

I've included an image with the best pictures I could get for the markings on U1, U2, and U3.

I also did the following voltage measurements:

705149
Direct from Power Supply: 12.5V
From power supply port on PCB: 12.5V

V1
    C5: 5V
    C13: 5V
V2
    L7: 0.10V
    C7: 2.5V
    C8: 2.5V
V3: 0.05V

705210
Direct from Power Supply: 12.5V
From power supply port on PCB: 12.5V

V1
    C5: 5V
    C13: 5V
V2
    L7: 0V
    C7: 0V
    C8: 0V
V3: 0V

Let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

The voltage at L7 for the 705149 board should be the same as at C7/C8, namely +2.5V. Perhaps your probe isn't making contact through the lacquer?

Try measuring C17 and C20. It could be that your V3 measurements are also being affected by lacquer.

The results for 705210 are unexpected. This was supposed to be your working PCB, yet V2 and V3 are missing???

If you connect your USB-SATA bridge PCB on its own, can you see it with UVCView or USBDeview?

Sorry, that was my mistake. The measurements are swapped. The working 210 PCB is the one that shows voltages for V2 and V3. You're probably right about the lacquer. I had to apply a bit of pressure to get the millivolt readings. I'll see if I can get a proper reading.

I'll also get the software and see what it reports as well. I've noted that the power light flashes on the working PCB when I plug in the power supply.

I expect that V3 should be ~1V. I'm not certain, but it could be that the bridge IC derives V3 from V2 via an internal switchmode regulator. If so, then repairing V2 might be enough to recover V3.

You might like to measure the resistance between ground and each of V2 and V3. This will tell us if any of the ICs could be damaged/shorted.

Finding this post saves me some time in repair my WD 2TB Mybook. From what I have measured on my pcb equivalents to your pcb : U3 (either RT8060(smd marking code 3R=xx)/RT8060A(smd marking code 20=xx) or TLV62566(smd marking code .|SIL aka SIL) should have on pin1(power good signal) logical 1, and 2.5v output on L7. Only when both are true, HDD is attached to pcb and usb is connected V3 will be generated with value of 1v. In my case equivalent to yours U3 was dead. With help from (http://monitor.espec.ws/section27/topic200427.html), some measurement on pin1 and resistor divider on pin5 i choose to replace dead IC with SY8008B (smd marking code ABxxx). Please note that on my pcb pin1 is externally pulled up to +5v with resistor 4.7k (which guarantee logical 1 when RT8060 is used - see datasheet), and like this i have external EN signal for SY8008B. Also please note that this replace is only for data recovery and is not intended as full pcb repair.

Thanks for the feedback.

BTW, I believe that U4 and U5 should be AO4619 and NX7101IDM, respectively.
