Seagate barracuda endless test loop

March 23rd, 2017, 13:41

I have a Seagate Barracuda ST39111A that I've been using to explore / learn the serial terminal commands. There is nothing important on the drive, but I would like to know what I've done to it and how to put it back like I found it. I've been referencing the Seagate Diagnostic Commands PDF at https://www.itosaka.com/WordPress/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Seagate-Diagnostic-Command.pdf, though some commands listed are not supported on my drive. It is a whopping 9.1GB, and this drive is not a F3. Mainly I've been using commands that just display things, and I believe the last thing I did before the trouble started was M from Level 1.

M

Show Flash ROM Device Code, Manufacturer Code, User Default Algorithm Selector
Word (ASW), and Fallback Default ASW. Drive will reboot after finishing this command.

Now the drive automatically starts running factory tests, in order, whenever the drive is powered up. If a ^C software reset is issued, the same thing happens. The drive is not recognized by my IDE card. I can ^Z and get to a T> prompt, but power cycling the drive starts the whole process over again. So my questions are: 1) Did the M command start this mess, and, if so, why? 2) how should I go about un-breaking this drive?

Thanks in advance.

power on and put screen dump of terminal. Look for something like AGE= nn

The entire capture file is ~82k, so I'll just attach it.

I don't see an "AGE=" in the test output, but from a T> prompt, ; gives me Age=42.
