Just joined - and pleased to do so!
I have a Lacie Big Disk Extreme 1 TB USB / Firewire from approximately October 2008 that is giving me a bit of a headache. It has gone AWOL on me. Most of the data is non-critical, but a single file would be very nice to get back.
It contains two naughty ST3500620AS in striped configuration on a Lacie interface card. Both drives are with Lacie's LC11 proprietary firmware. The unit is now non-functioning. Shows up in Disk Management as an 8 GB un-allocated drive. Windows of course proposes to initialize the array. None of the standard data recovery software sees exactly the same.
I have pulled out the two drives and tested them separately on a SATA port in a different machine with fresh cables. One is recognized as short of a 500 GB large, unallocated drive - that sounds ok. The other is recognized as 0 GB un-allocated drive and assumed to be the culprit. It spins up with none of the suspicious clicking and does not spin down again. Spin sounds like it normally would. I made a DOS boot disk with HDAT2 and it does not detect it either.
BIOS does not see the drive. I switched SATA configuration from AHCI to IDE, and this did not solve the problem either - to BIOS it is non-existing.
PCB looks fine, no smell, no obvious burn marks. I have attached pictures of it.
Suggestions on how to move on from here?
