How to turn SMART on on my HDD?

January 19th, 2018, 20:07

Hi, I have an HDD that I want to sell so I want to run hdparm (it's called HDDErase in parted magic) using parted magic's live CD to completely wipe data and put it at factory settings. The thing is, hdparm wouldn't work without SMART enabled, and I also want to see the health of the disk before selling it, so I can't see it without SMART.

I have another HDD and it shows me the health data so SMART is enabled in the BIOS I assume. I use Windows and CrystalDiskInfo program shows me how the other HDD have SMART but not the one I need to sell. See this:

As you can see, my Samsung HD500 is "unknown", and my other disk has a blue mark and shows "Good" so SMART is enabled (see upper left).

In parted magic live CD, when I try to enable SMART, it gives me this error:

"A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options."

I don't know what to do because I don't know how to use the linux terminal.

Please help me enable SMART on my disk, thanks.

Well,
As This Hard Drive Might be having a USB interface the tool software you are using might not be able to parse the parameters properly
