Platter Cleaning Question

April 18th, 2018, 16:43

I have a single platter WD that needs cleaning. The drive had been opened by the client before arriving here. The top surface of the platter is not actually used (one head). The client had done a 'DIY' head swap and it failed. In the process he put a significant amount of finger prints on the top platter. Wouldn't normally be an issue but to hide his 'work' he must have put some fluid onto the top surface to remove the prints which soaked through the spindle and onto the bottom platter. The drive was subsequently spun which sprayed the bottom surface. As this is a single platter, single surface drive we can clean the platter externally from the casing if necessary.

We have a sonic cleaner that we use for liquid damaged cellphones, but wanted some advice on the type of cleaning fluid for hard drives. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here we use 3M™ Novec™ 7100 Engineered Fluid and Clean room Tekniclean microfiber wipes. It work very nice on dirty platters

I vaguely recall the customer service folks recommending the 2000x product.

I haven't tried it, yet. One 1-gallon bottle runs about $220 I think. Best to call for confirmation. Tell them what you are trying to do. They will guide accordingly. They seemed to me like they know what they are talking about.
