Hdd malfonction after heat wave

August 29th, 2018, 11:03

Hello
First of all, sorry to use google translation but I do not speak good english.
My external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 2to)

ST2000DM001
PN : 1CH164-572
FW : CC44
date 13167
site TK
sticker 1332F

worked during a period of high heat (37 ° C in the room) and at the end of the day the computer did not detect it anymore. I changed the enclosure but now the disk is detected as 3.86 Go and not 2 To. It does not appear in Computer (windows explorer) but only in disk management. it is not initialized and there is the error message indicating a peripheral problem input / output. Can I change the pcb or it will not change anything?
If you need more information do not hesitate to ask
Thank you very much in advance for your answer

Chris

Can you hear it spin up normally and stay spinning?

Or does it click and/or spin down?

At the drive wake up (when i switch on the usb dock) there is some clicks, then a sound like if the arm is going from one side to the other side of the disk, maybe 2 or 3 time (don't know if it is really whats happen) and nothing: no sound no spin.
All test with Seatool "seem" to be passed.

Internal problem, heads are bad with good chances of media damage on this model.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do DIY :-(

If you have data on it you need, then you will have to send to a data recovery lab.

But please stop playing with it, it can only make things worse.

Thank you very much for your time.

Fortunately there is no really important data on this hard drive and a recovery would cost much more than what these data are worth.

Obviously a pcb swap would be useless in this case ?

Exactly what he ^^^ said.

Hi again
I just finished reading the topic called:

DIY: What's the big deal - discussion

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12691

What I learned from this very interesting reading is that the absolute priority of data recovery professionals is the rescue of their customers' data. It's quite normal since it's their job.
I have a completely different approach to the extent that I consider my data as already irretrievably lost.
As I said in my previous posts, I do not have irreplaceable data on this hard drive and the cost of the rescue is not worth what the data is worth; (My very important data is stored on 5 different devices !!!).

I know it's the worst thing to do
I know I do not have the slightest idea of the difficulty and the complexity
I know I have a 99% chance of destroying my data irretrievably
I know that my data can not be retrieved after that even by a professional
I know that the possibility of recovering my data is less than 1%

So even if the chances of screwing things up are 99% and I do not even get 5% of the data, I will be happy.
I do it more for fun and to learn and understand than to retrieve this data.
To be honest, on this hard drive, there's a lot of rips from my dvds and blurays as well as my cd collection and I know that it's going to take me weeks and weeks and weeks of all re-rip again and I especially lazy.
I add that I have no sense of taking money from the pocket of professionals because this hard drive would never pass into their hands.

Which is why I would like to know which donor disc to choose? must it be exactly the same? And what head combs to choose for this model of hard disk?
