WD5000BPVT-24HXZT3

March 8th, 2019, 5:24

Hello,

drive spins normally. FW backup is ok by all four heads.
But in DE shows by headmap only heads 0,1,2. On begining read at speed of 45mb/s, then stop reading.

Is it normal that show only 3 heads in DE, but under WD utility 4 and also read normaly from SA.

Thank you

I change heads, symptoms remain.

FW backup done without problems(rom, modules and tracks) with normal speed
I create new task in DE. Build headmap,, but headmap shows only heads 0,1,2.
WD marwell shows 4 heads and also read from all of them.

I check donor.Under WD marvell show 4 heads and also under DE shows 4 heads.

When I start reading under DE it reads first 890000 LBA(heads H0, H1, H2) with speed 45MB/s. After 890000(still under H2) stop reading.
I try to read also from back without any result.

Any suggestion

Thank you

It might have 4 physical heads, but only 3 are being used. Can you send some screenshots of the WD Utility window and also a screenshot of the ROM head map screen.

Maybe it was at another data recovery company and they tweaked something so it wouldn't work (like changing the head map in ROM).

I know owner, and he didn't say that he was in another shop.
Modules from begining to 63 was read by all 4 heads, from 115 only with 0,1
Tracks was read by 0 and 1 from Cyl -256 to Cyl -65

This model has really crazy HM, to cut it short here is what i do:

IF No one touched it before you then you do the following:

-Forget the last Head now.
-Clone/Dump H0 then go for H1 leave the last heads then Scan for Part.

Am assuming the last head has issues (the third) and my best guess this drive has 3 heads only..
change heads if needed.

let us know later about the results..

Good luck

Thank you Jared and Einstein9 for help.

I try to image by selective head without success.
It read from 0 to 890049. I can see that read from head 0, then from head 1 and finally from head 2. When come to 890049 with head 2 stop reading.

Behaveor with original heads and with donor heads is same.

If I raw recovery what it read I can see files.
Also under DE it show drive with all partitions, but then is problem to access partitions data.

The drive belongs to ZEPHYR_N family. They have capacity of 750GB for 4 logical heads and 500GB for 3 logical heads.
So your drive has one head cut at factory....

Try to do reverse copy mode and see what happens.

Hello
Thank you for all your suggestions.
I try with another PCB. Now I get also under DE all four heads.
But still no progress with reading.

Have you attempted to read via PIO mode (Use hardware retries) and also increase the timeout to something like 10000ms? Sometimes this can help.

Hello cpm0088,

I test all heds under PC3000 and all passed test.
I can Access cestors from 0 to 899263(that is the amount of data, which DE read. After 899263 sectors are not accesible.

Check the G-List and P-List and see if theres anything unusual, could even be translator is messed up.

Hello,

I try also with head editing in RAM, but still I'm unable to get Access to user data

@jerovsek, could you upload your ROM? I'm curious as to why one tool reports 4 in-use heads while the other reports 3. Would it be worthwhile to compare the patient and donor resource dumps?

Hello Mr. Zabkar,

I work with PC3000.
WD Marwell utility show 4/4 heads with original PCB. In Data Extractor whiich is part of PC3000 it show only 3 heads.
When I write ROM and ROM moduls to donor PCB WD Marwel show 4/4 and also under DE I see 4 heads.
But with original PCB or with donor PCB I can Access only sectors from 0 to 899263.

It looks like something is wrong with translator.

Could it be that the original headmap was 0,1,3? Like that head 2 can't read nothing,

Can you read from the other heads after that LBA? Can you read last sector?
Have you tried a translator regen?

Hello PCLab,

thank you.
As I already write I can Access only this sectors. If I try to read any other sector Access to it is not possible.

In DE it reads from heads 0,1,2
