Check damaged preamp / clean Platters from dust

Hi @ all.

Today i have a damaged Seagate ST2000DM001. The drive spins up ... chirp, click, chirp, click ... spin down.

Drive IDs correct with serial/FW but wrong size.

On the top platter i found a spot (about 10mm) with dust of smoke, same spot inside the top cover. Platter has no visible scratches.
I think that this head is burned and suggest, that the preamp also died. (Hard drive enclosure is also dead, probably overvoltage)

Can anyone tell me how to determine/measure if the preamp is dead? I searched the PC3K docs and the forums but didn't find a howto for that.

At next step i'll try headswap. Is there any "save" workaround to clean the platter from this smoke-dust? Should i try to clean it at the moment of head-swap or after reading the data from the other heads? Whats the meaning of the experts here?

Does Ctrl-L report the preamp ID? If not, and if you upload the ROM dump, I could find the preamp ID for you.

Also, if you upload detailed photos of the HDD and bridge PCBs, I could help you to determine if the 5V supply rail was overwhelmed. I can't see any other way for the preamp to have been damaged, unless the motor controller failed and overvolted the preamp's negative supply rail. But then this would mean that the HDD PCB is a donor with the patient's ROM.

I could also show you the +5V and -5V test pins for the preamp. A resistance test may reveal whether the preamp is dead.

Still one more test would be to measure the read and write channel DC voltages when the drive is spinning.

Otherwise, someone may be able to analyse the servo errors for you.

i think, you have to swap the HSA. you heads are not working properly.

according to your post there is 10mm smoke partical. i can't belive it. this is huge amount. however platter has smoke particals you have to clean it before head replacement.

Ctrl-L doesn't give anything - but i determined the Preamp version "B4 03" like described in the ACE-Blog.

I don't know what is in ACE's blog, but if the preamp ID was retrieved from the preamp itself, then it is most probably OK.

Otherwise I would measure the resistances between ground and each of the +5V and -5V test points. (I'm not sure if I have correctly identified the +5V and Ground pins, but a continuity check with the SATA power connector should confirm this.) Perform the tests with the PCB on and off the drive.

Measure the voltages between ground and each of the Read/Write Channels test points. Do this with the PCB off the drive, and with the drive spinning. I believe that the DC levels of these test points should sit in the middle of the Vio range (0V - 1.8V).

The other HDA signals will probably be sitting at digital logic levels. ISTR that the regulator outputs (V1, V2, V3) will probably be 0.9V, 0.9V, and 1.8V, but not necessarily in that order.
