WD My Book DUO 8TB, Hit Configure... recovery hopeless?

June 3rd, 2019, 19:13

Hi all,

We had an issue with the raid for our 8TB WD My Book Duo. It rebuilt the mirror, everything was fine, and a day went by. Then... for some reason... "Configure" got clicked out of naivety, and once realizing what was happening, the power plug was pulled and some oh-****s were uttered.

Windows now sees it as unallocated space. Drive recovery tools see the encrypted .SWF files.

Sent it off... and Datarecovery.com seems to think it can't be recovered because the "Configure" button overwrote the encryption on the files that are there, so they can't be decrypted.

I'm just looking for a second opinion, or any other options and ideas.

Would love to get this back, it's 20 years of photos, documents, and media. Not too worried about cost (up to a point).

Is it completely hopeless?

Thank you to anyone with any answers.

If you're looking for a second opinion, we can take a look if you wish.

Hi. This post is a few years old, but I recently had a similar issue with a My Book Duo. "Configure" got clicked through by mistake, had two units installed and ended up clicking config on the wrong one. Did not complete the formatting but clicking configure seems to change the key. Data is on the drives, encrypted and cannot be decrypted now.

Did OP have any luck getting their data back?

Need to check drives outside cage. If i understand "configure" process well, chances are still there.
Key is in SA (service area) shouldn't be changed.
