I don't get it. If you ask WD's tech support whether a particular drive is a CMR or SMR model, they will either tell you that they don't know, or are not at liberty to divulge the information. Yet it's right there in their press release.

The company will sample the 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR HDD and the Ultrastar DC HC550 CMR HDD in 18TB and 16TB capacities to select customers by the end of this year,

The point is that we have enough problems with those damn high capacity drives
and the future of EASY DR will be some how dark. probably limited to few people on the field.

Mostly targeting the data center/cloud businesses.

I got one 2 months back maybe "Enterprise NVR Storage 16 drives 8TB each" I was lucky coz it was some BADS in some drives
but more than bads i think will be some how harder.

That article is confusing ...

For those getting here by google looking for a quick answer: CMR=PMR. For those who want to know why PMR was renamed to CMR ...


The author seems to think that the term "PMR" was redefined when "SMR" drives appeared. I don't see it that way. However, he does understand that both CMR and SMR drives use PMR technology.
