What's the sound?

Seems it tries to post but shuts down.

Figured someone might be able to tell me from the sound what's up with it.

Bad heads and possible media damage...this is not a DIY sorry to say

Thank you for listening! So what am I hearing here? The head assembly is moving but it cannot find where to start? Or what is the failure mode? Is there a log somewhere that I can get at with a serial connection?

Questions questions... Did someone serve this drive's heads on a platter? Cold?

What can cause this?

It was sitting in an external enclosure on my work desk. undisturbed - i hope.

What you are hearing is the heads trying to reach SA and not be able to do it.

With a serial cable (you can find how to do it if you search it), you might get and idea of what's going on. But it will be a confirmation of what we said.

Yep, this one is the lawsuit one had I known i'd told our technician to burn more midnight oil to get the backup qnap ready! (It was days away, soooo close)

Anyway, I just wrote a post about my problems speaking to it through the serialvines. Seems evil monkeys are eating the bits somewhere on the way because it's silent, very silent on the line. Poking it with ctrl-z does nothing. Am I supposed to isolate the pcb head connector or not?

I managed to get the serial port working.(ehm... I had the gnd in the wrong place last time... In my defense the leads change color on the way, it's very confusing)

Is Servo the head servo then I guess? So... Head assembly swap?

Heads are gone.
On every power on, it gets worse, so do not power up the drive if it contains anything valuable.

I'm afraid it's the end of the road for DIY and if you care about the data, you need to consult a good DR lab.
All this, assuming the damaged heads haven't already scratched the surfaces (which, as stated above, is very common on these models).
