Target disk unrecognized after using HDD Raw Copy Tool

April 13th, 2020, 5:37

Hi, I really need help and I hope this is the right section.
I recovered all data from an external USB disk to another USB disk using HDD Raw Copy Tool.
My OS is Windows 10.
The source disk is an old 2 TB WD MyBook 1111, NTFS formatted, initializated MBR and marked as damaged by CrystalDiskInfo, that reports C5 and C6 errors.
The target disk is a new 3 TB WD Elements, NTFS formatted, initializated GPT.
The whole process was successfull, but now the target disk is no more recognized by the system. It appears in Disk Management as not initialized and the whole partition appears as unallocated.
Before recovery, the target disk was initialized GPT and it was regularly recognized by computer with a drive letter.
Using MiniTool Partition Wizard, I converted MBR to GPT, then I tried to recover partition, but nothing has changed.
Anyone can help me to solve this problem? Of course I'm available to provide further information if needed.
Thanks in advance

HDD Raw Copy Tool is a utility for low-level, sector-by-sector hard disk duplication and image creation.
So, if the source drive had some logical issues, then it carried out to the destination.
Next, try to recover data using data recovery software (ex: R-Studio from r-tt.com). May have to run a scan.

By the way, on the source drive, before cloning with HDD RAW Copy Tool, did you remove it our of the plastic enclosure?

Thank you for your answer. Yes, I removed the source drive from its plastic box and I connected it to the computer through a docking station SATA to USB 3.0.
So, you think I should try to recover data with r-studio. I don'know that program, but I'll try.
Thank you so much

The problem is that your source drive is encrypted via its USB bridge.

So you have an encrypted destination drive in an external box.

You are going to need ReallyMine to decrypt it.

Bingo

Thank you, I didn't know USB drives were encrypted. Is ReallyMine a program for Linux only or there is a version for Windows too?

As far as I know, it's linux only.

there is another workaround if you don't want to mess with linux.

You can take another drive, same as your source drive, take it out of the box, then image SATA to SATA your source to this new target.
Then connect your new target to your source's USB bridge and copy your data.
This will only work if your source and target have the same encryption IC (eg. IC 1607E, Symwave etc)

Thank you very much northwind, I learned many new things from you. I will make some attempts, hoping luck will assist me.
Thanks a lot again
