WD External Drive Failure

June 23rd, 2020, 13:21

I have a 2TB WD external drive from a few years ago which has stopped working. Disk Management in Windows shows that all the space is unallocated. If I run WD Data LifeGuard Quick Test, it fails with Status Code = 05 (Failed Electrical test element), Failure Checkpoint = 99(Unknown Test).

Any suggestions on what the issue might be and is there still a way to recover the data from the drive?

Is the drive making any sort of clicking noise or is it spinning quietly?

I haven't noticed any clicking noises. Seems to be spinning quietly

There is a good chance that it's just a firmware malfunction related to bad sector reallocation that is causing the drive to get stuck busy then. That or maybe just one read/write head failed.

It's probably not a DIY type of situation in either event, but almost certainly can be recovered by a professional data recovery company.

Is the data of any value to you, or just the sort of stuff that would be nice to have back and you can live without?
