Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi All,
i have here a Seagate ST500DM002.
No clicks, goes ready and show only 3.86 GB, see log.
PCB ist original -> and was changed, but the same error.
(donor works with patient pcb)
Another guy say my ROM is damaged and really some things are strange
In DFl-ST Tool -> i get a "command error"
-> Head Map and SAP-Control -> but i can see the data.
I can not short the pcb, may be my timing is to bad.
I change the heads and the platter looks ok, but the same error!
Who has ever had the same mistake and was able to solve it
Thanks for any help!

are you sure the pcb (rom) is native?

Yes - pcb is native, the SN number is the same number as on the label.

was that log taken while shorting it or it is the orig behaviour?
July 14th, 2020, 9:18
The log is original after power on (without short).
I know the right short points but it doesn't work.
July 14th, 2020, 13:58
no point in shorting, it can't even read sa defect list, not even with new heads, that's why i thought ROM may not be native.
And i still think something similar... Didn't the drive happen to be subject to a previous DR attempt?

supposedly the dealer has only test the pcb from the donor drive to the patient drive!
Both -> donor pcb and patient pcb work on donor drive!

Both -> donor pcb and patient pcb work on donor drive!
that's a bad sign... the patient pcb should not work on the donor since ROM contains unique adaptive parameters.
So it means to me that patient rom is on neither pcb, is it?

I explained that wrong.
I tested the patient board with the donor ROM on the donor hdd to ensure that the patient board was OK -> was OK.
I saved all data (mods and so on from donor) and patient rom.

can you post both ROMs and pic of labels of both HDDs?

I finished the project.
Thanks
