4TB HGST HDS724040ALE640 wrong capacity

July 14th, 2020, 6:05

Hello,

I encounter a problem with a second-hand 4TB HDD I bought : it is seen as a 3TB HDD everywhere. I did not manage to identify the cause of this problem.

This forum has been helpful as I've managed to understand a bit more about how HDD work but now I rely on your knowledge !

Attached is the SMART test (collected with PartedMagic), there are 3 errors at the end linked to ICRC. I've tried different cables and SATA ports but it didn't solve the problem.

Thank you !

Thank you very much. The computer is a Fujitsu Celsius 420 and it seems like it has this problem. I've updated the BIOS but the problem still occurs and there's no way to disable the HPA in the options.
Anyways, using HDAT2 allowed me to restore the 4TB capacity which is already a good step !

If the drive supports it, there may be a way to disable the HPA feature set in the DCO (Device Configuration Overlay) options using HDAT2.
