Help with Seagate 7200.11

September 14th, 2020, 16:41

Hi guys
I have an old Seagate 7200.11 (which died back in 2009) and I really need want to recover the data.

Now both BSY and LBA problem have been solved but for some reason when I try to make a copy with ddrescue or HDDsuperClone the transfer speed it's around 10 B/s!

I've read that I may need to disable background media scan, re-location, media cache etc so I can have back the drive to "normal status" and trying to make an image from it.

Anyone willing to help here?

Read here:
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?p=10715#p10715

F3 T>F"RWRecoveryFlags",00,22
F3 T>F"BGMSFlags",00,22
F3 T>F"PerformanceFlags",043C,22
F3 T>F"MediaCacheControl",00,22

more info here:

But i have to say that if speed is so slow most likely is due to bad heads and/or bad surface.

Hi Michael,
the first 3 commands are ok but when I insert the last one (F"MediaCacheControl",00,22) I get this response: Invalid Diag Cmd Parameter...

Any suggestion?

that's because that drive does not have MC. Just ignore that msg. If these don't help you need a pro to recover it swapping heads.

Slightly better... in HDDsuperclone sometimes reads at 24Kb/s and sometimes goes for few minutes at 2Mb/s!
Another question, I've tried the r command on T level but I get an error "Invalid Diag Cmd"? I read that I should be able to dowonload and upload the sys modules but doesn't seems to work?

Really appreciate your help guys!

Regards
Antonio

That speed difference could be one head reading very very badly, and another reading only just badly. I could potentially provide more information with the progress log from HDDSuperClone. But with the information given so far, this is not likely to be a good recovery without professional recovery.

I have written a ZOC script for automatically sending the "F" commands:

Thanks Maximus, I'll post the log of hddsupeclone tomorrow so you can have a look :)

Thansk Fzabkar, I've already sent these (some are not in my F list so returns a Invalid dialog message).
I've found in other forums the following commands that may help to speed up the reading, do you know what they do and it would be safe to give it a try?:

F"OFFLINE_SPARING_ENABLED",0,22
F"BGMS_ENABLE",0,22
F"BGMS_PRESCAN",0,22
F"IRAW_ENABLE",0,22
F"ENABLE_EARLY_RECOVERY",1,22
F"VE_ENABLE_EARLY_RECOVERY",1,22
F"OFFLINE_SEEK_AWAY",0,22
F"MULTIPLICATION_FACTOR",0,22
F"AutomaticTraceSaveFlags",0,22
F"GlobalTraceTriggerFlags",0,22
F"PowerFlags",0,22
F"SCTInterval",0100,22
F"BGMSECCTLevel",ff,22
F"BGMSBusIdleIn100ms",1,22
F"IRAWDelayInMilliSecs",1,22
F"DOSMaxRetryCount",1,22
F"SCTTimerReadDefault",0100,22
F"SCTTimerWriteDefault",0100,22
F ”SMART_SUPPORTED”, 0,22
F ”READ_LOOKAHEAD_ENABLED”, 0,22
F "SMART_ENABLED", 0,22
F "SMART_SELF_TEST_SUPPORTED", 0,22
F"RWRecoveryFlags",01,22

I would think that it would be safe to enable/disable the same features that PC3000 does via its user menu. These were discussed in a thread at hddoracle.com, and are the same settings that I replicated in my ZOC script.

Hi guys,
Attached the log of HDDSuperClone.... Phase 1 completed, and phase 2 almost (8gb left)

I'm thinking to skip phase 3 and 4 and do the trimming as lots of area are not-trimmed....

Some area has been read at 1200Kb/s and some at 40Kb/s....

What do you think?

Log analysis: The drive has 4 heads, and one has some issues in a few spots across the drive. In those spots a second head also shows some small issues. However the first 7-8% of the drive has issues with all 4 heads. I would suspect media damage at the beginning of the drive. The good news is that all heads are reading, even at the beginning, so until a head or the drive dies, further data can still be cloned. If something dies it would likely be caused from spending time reading at the beginning. You are doing good at 91% recovered so far.

Don’t skip phase 3 or 4 as they finish trying to read the non-tried areas. That would be like just giving up on trying to read possibly good data.

Unfortunately my heads gave up! Completely dead almost at the end of phase 2!
91%complete... it’s a shame as I had 45gb of not-trimmed data that I could have recovered!

Tried to open the image with DMDE.
Filesystem reconstruction has a lot of folders missing (for example I can’t see at all my documents or desktop folder of the user directory) which leaves me only with the raw data extraction.
Does anyone have a more exhaustive file signature to be used? The default of DMDE has few things but not a lot
