Locked as in read only or totally locked?

Is this one of the re-badged HGST drives? If so, I have 7 or 8 all doing the same thing. https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40753

Correct, is one of this WestenTachi drives. User got it from e-bay came inside of an enclosure and worked fine inside the enclosure until he took it out to use it as an internal drive, he trashed the enclosure. Drive is empty, he just wants to be able to use it.

So this one is a "shucked" drive. https://www.instructables.com/How-to-Fi ... el-Disks-/
Is it a problem with the 3.3v pin? One of my drives is a shucked drive, but I tried the 3.3v method shown and it still shows locked. It is a WD100ezaz. I do not have pc-3000 but in the thread I linked to here on hddguru, you can see what it shows under other software. The WDxxEZAZ-??TDBA? 's are helium drives I believe(https://hddscan.com/blog/2020/hdd-wd-smr.html), so you probably do not want to crack the case open on it.

SATA pin #3 disables all power to the drive, so nothing will be detected on that SATA port, locked or otherwise.

Drive is spinning and comes ready so PIN #3 is not the issue on this one, the issue is locked and any attempt to unlock it has failed. case close - client is doing and RMA.

Thank you

I wonder if the drive supports the new ATA Rebuild Assist and remanufacture command sets (head test and depop), and whether these are still accessible in the drive's "locked" state. If so, then HDDSuperClone may be a solution.

I wish him good luck with WD's RMA! They are a PITA. They will not RMA a hard drive that the enclosure has had ANYTHING done to it and if they do not have an original receipt, you are out of luck... You did mention they bought it on Ebay. That is where mine came from and I have already been through it. Paid shipping there and if they decide they will not RMA it you have to pay shipping back or they will destroy it for you.

If you still have the enclosure, then WD are required by US law to honour the warranty, whether or not the drive has been shucked.

They can try that with WD RMA. They turned down over 40 drives from me because I did not have the "original" purchase receipt from an "authorized" WD Dealer. WD's warranty is really not worth the virtual bits it is printed with. Good luck on getting anything done. It took them over two months to ship my drives back and then it did not happen until I turned them in to the BBB. Just do some googling on the horror stories.

Most likely mechanical damage, which is reported as a locked drive.

These are basically unrecoverable.

bought a couple of these EZAZ models 8TB white label of ebay as broken. i ran the serials and they were listed as under warranty.
they are shucked tho apparently listed as externals. they dont work. with a molex power adpter they show model number but no smart data
wont respond to initialize commands. "not ready"
sent one to WD without the externals they replaced with one that has.
the other got rejected got offered to send them shipping label to get it back so here it sits.
doesnt work in the replacment (ext) controller and it was an EDAZ model.
so maybe controller design?

also worth note symptoms identical both models.
