ST2000DM001-9YN164 Failure

Hi!

I got a ST2000DM001-9YN164 (Firmware: CC4B) from a friend with pictures that are dear to him but not worth paying the price tag local data rescue companies are asking for. (up to 1000+€)
I'm quite a bit into IT and a tiny bit into electronics so I feel like I should be able to fix it as long as it doesn't require me to open the HDD, if I can get some guidance from some of you gurus.

When hooked up it seems to do nothing. No sound, No spin, no proper detection. Windows sees it like a removal disk drive without disk.
Unscrewed PCB, was extremely oxidized, while cleaning I realized that one chip looked severely burned, you can even see the inside wires shining through.

Now, I have a few questions:

Can I just switch out the defective chip?

Can I use raspberry pi 3.3v uart interface to get terminal access to this HDD? I came accross some sources saying that 3v3 is fine, but others state that 1.8 is necessary to be safe?

Replace the entire PCB and transfer ROM from patient to donor PCB.

Where on earth are people ask for that sort of cash ?

You may actually have one of the few cases where a PCB swap is actual way forward Swap the pcb and ROM over and hopefully there will be no damage down the line - but you never know. You don't say how it got into that state.

Can you tell us what happened to the drive. It looks like a modular power supply was replaced without the cables and it shorted something. Hopefully a replacement PCB is all that is needed. You will need to get a new PCB, using the number that is on the board somewhere, then replace the ROM chip too. Then it should work normally. Someone will be around to give more details if needed. But we really need to know how the drive was damaged.

it has 1.8V terminal, so you need 1.8V ttl uart adapter.

PCB + ROM replacement should do it as long as preamp is intact.
You are risking 2 things here: killing the rom during chip transfer and killing data if preamp is toast.
I think your local DR company won't charge 1000 if only the pcb is gone. I can also help for a lower price if you don't mind sending it in the neighbourhood.

I've seen that particular failure several times. On those occasions there was no overvoltage. You can test the TVS diodes (12T and 5JT) to eliminate that possibility.

Two local DR companies said it's minimum 250/300 when lucky and up to 1000+ depending on the kind of problem, but it may be worth 50€ at best to the owner. Aside from that, I find it to be an interesting project. Owner said it just stopped working.

Ordered a 1.8V TTL adapter. If I only have to transfer this huge windbond flash, it may go well. Diodes seem fine in diode test mode. (0.8/0.44, 0/0 reverse)

Please provide sources. Everything I found here and online indicates that your statement is incorrect.

The commenter after you seems to agree with me: only printed numbers on pcb must match, sticker number doesn't need to match.

@psilo, be careful when working with the ROM. If you damage it, data recovery will become very expensive.
