Samsung Module ofset Method?

June 5th, 2021, 18:05

I am recovering ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
Head was stucked on platter. Removed it . Dont damage on heads first. All was full speed. Started to clone drive. Aprox % 30 cloned good performance. No bad behaviour. But somehow, some bad parts made heads weak. 3 heads reading speed dropped smaller . But still could continioue to image. But terminal logs increased smo time later. After then I have decided to head swap. Swapped head. But.

Drive initilization ok. Everyting look ok. But in DE sectors not same as before . ( I am always checking it after any operation. ) Then checked S list. Yep. 3 of S list copies bad. Drive working. Everything ok. Some modules bad. S list and A list bad. I have backed up modules before. I have drives S list

Now. How could I ofset a Samsung drives module . No command for that in MRT. dont know even PC3k.
I dont have tracks copy when S list not bad.
Tried to analyse modules. Look like its possible manualy.
There are so many empty tracks.

I am using MRT.
Any advices. Thanks

your problem is probably not how to relocate these modules, it is rather how to get anything written to the SA without damaging other stuff.

Could you upload your resource dump? I think I might know a way to relocate your module.

The ROMCODE0 module (ID 86h) is empty (zero filled), and it is the same size as the SLIST, so I suspect that it could be used as an alternative site for the SLIST.

Are you able to copy the contents of SLIST to ROMCODE0, and then save ROMCODE0? If so, then the next step would be to edit the cylinder and sector numbers in the FIT module so that the FIT then points to the new location.

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

00000200  11 00 53 4C 49 53 54 20 20 20 00 00 C0 05 04 09  ..SLIST   ..À...

00000280  86 00 52 4F 4D 43 4F 44 45 30 00 00 C0 05 12 01  †.ROMCODE0..À...

An alternative method might be to truncate the SLIST. The current SLIST contains data in the range 0 - 0xFCD7, so limiting its size to 0x80 sectors (by editing the FIT) might get around the problem. I don't know what would happen if the defect list were to overflow, so you would need to prevent the drive from adding to the list.

BTW, this method has been successfully tested on another Samsung model, although in that case it was the MOVLY001 module which was truncated.

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05

0000FCC6  A2 0E DA C9 1E AC
0000FCCC  A2 0E 7C CA FF FF
0000FCD2  FF FF 00 00 FD FF  <-- last entry in SLIST
0000FCD8  FF FF FF FF FF FF
0000FCDE  FF FF FF 7F FF 7F  <- noise
0000FCE4  FF FF FF FF FF FF
0000FCEA  FF FF FF 7F FF FE

Thanks for answer.
I guessed that modify FIT and write module to new adress. I have solved FIT before. I can use another an empty track to new Slist adress. But firstly have to practice . What do you think about , Is it enough that Only modifying FIT to new adress. FIT2 looking also similar . Is it necessary to modify Rom or any other module?
(I have tried that modify FIT before with practise long time ago. But could not finished that ofset trying. As I remember I coulndt reach to modules after that triying. It was a garbage drive. Not this case)

I have Original Slist module. And Slit.chs file.

I have just recognised terminal errors says

I think I have to ofset all of them each modules to new adress and modify FIT to new adress

ISTM that the drive cannot update the respective modules. Could there be a write fault?

Maybe you should clean the HDA contacts and check the supply voltage(s) for the preamp?

typical symptom of bad writing after head swap. It's only gonna get worse, it's not the sa that's bad, it was fine at the first start. so i see no point in relocating the modules, which would not be possible either, whichout the ability to write correctly.

Can you show us the two PCBs, patient and donor? AFAIK, there were at least two PCB versions for this model, one with a Samsung part number, the other with a Seagate number. ISTR that there were two different preamp voltages, 1.8V or 2.5V, but I could be thinking of another model.

According to the stickers on the motors, one drive is an M8 and the other is an M8E. Could that be the problem?

Re: Samsung Module ofset Method?

I have recognised this. But Patient accepted hsa. Its reading user data also.

I would try another donor. Bored me this case.
Just checked logic scan. Not good reading speed. Maybe M8 and M8E couse, or heads weak really.

DE imaging was at 66% before problem occured. Anyway.

I am also thinking about clone disk to same model with empty Slist. Then write patients Slist to it. Any chance for this? I have to do some practise for all
