Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi!
I have a 40 Gig Maxtor 6Y040L0, and it had a few bads.
I scanned it with erase waits on, and the bad sectors are gone, but I still have a few red boxes when I scan with MHDD. Drive is OK, but there is an area of approx 500 MB, where the write speed is around 1 MB/s, and maxtor's Powermax utility says that "this drive is failing, code OEABA979".
Can I do something, so that the disk won't use the red area, like marking the sectors as bad or something like this?
