Seagate Barracuda Pro Serial number change

September 5th, 2021, 22:52

Hi,

does anyone know if it's possible to change the serial number of Seagate Barracuda Pro 8TB drives? (ST8000DM004/009)

I have two of these drives (white label) and while they have two different serial numbers on their physical stickers, they both identify to the OS as serial number 00000000 which is causing some issues with programs that ID them by that.

I assume the serial number is saved on the SPI/EEPROM chip, and I don't mind using a hardware programmer, but I also assume that it uses some sort of CRC check? If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful. :)

I've just noticed that the WWN is also the same for both drives, which makes one of them not appear if connected to a LSI HBA, and not appear in ESXI at all. :/

I do have the original Serial Number and WWN the drives are supposed to have, as they're marked on the sticker. I just need a way to get them into the drive firmware.
