Correct WD400 PCB replacement

April 4th, 2022, 5:03

Hello, I recently toasted the PCB from an old hard drive by mistake, and now I'm looking for the right replacement.

My drive
======

MDL: WD400BB-00JHC0
DATE: 12 SEP 2005
DCM: HSBHYTJCH
WD P/N: WD400BB-00JHC0

(Silkscreen text)
PCB: 2060-701292-000 REV. A

Little sticker near the Molex connector reads:
2061-701292-000 AN XC 2D42 0B4Z 8 0007100 6107

Donor
====

MDL: WD400BB-23JHC0
DATE: 13 MAR 2005
DCM: HSBANTJCA

(Silkscreen text)
PCB: 2060-701292-000 REV. A
Little sticker near the Molex connector reads:
2061-701292-000 AG XW 2033 UNWX 9 0006370 5376

Note that the donor has the same exact PCB silkscreen text as my drive, but the sticker near the Molex has a different letter (AG vs. AN), and the rest is different too, (I don't know if this part is important, what is it?)
The donor also a different DCM and while mine is 00JHC0, this one is 23JHC0. The dates are also very different (6 months apart).

So would this one be a good replacement board?
I'd appreciate very much your help as I'm doing this for the first time

Cheers

fzabkar has answer this for you on tom'shardware.

I'm asking about the PCB in particular. If the PCB version and revision match, is that enough? Or do I need the disk part number to match too?
I have already removed the BIOS chip and also dumped its contents just in case.

Generally - yes, and most of the time revision number isn't overly important.

It is also a question how badly you toasted it, can you move ROM to new pcb or it is gone as well, moreover, if you toasted the preamp you are likely to toast the data with the new pcb.

Great, thanks for the info!

I can move the ROM, I already desoldered and dumped it just in case.
About the the preamp, I'm not sure. What's the easiest most definitive way to find out?

measure with multimeter and compare to a known good drive having the same preamp. maybe...

I finally was able to get the compatible PCB and replace the EEPROM, everything is working successfully.
Thanks to Lardman and pepe

Well,
Measure with multimeter is this what you are saying pepe sir ,The multi meter probes would be injecting 3.3V approx To the Damn Thing ,Might be a multimeter can toast it to

a multimeter cannot toast a preamp. it can toast the head itself though... not by measuring from the preamp connector of course.

Hello ,
Were you suggesting to check preamp on PCB or Preamp Header that goes to HSA

Well ,
Preamp is on the HSA and if PReamp is toast so is the head ,Now do not tell me preamps can me changed ,They can but who bothers ,Have you checked the voltages that go to the HSA header ? Frank

Your use of the phrase "check preamp on PCB" is confusing. There is no preamp on the PCB, so your meaning isn't clear.

In any case, a typical multimeter produces 1mA on the diode range, and 0.1mA on the 200 ohms range.

Well,
i am confused with pepe sirs statement ,My submission is that if we poke around HSA connector with a multimeter it should toast the heads aka preamp inside reason ,High voltage to circuit from multimeter ,Amps is a different this ,But great multimeters like my protek 603 have a special 0.25 volts in its testing capabilities ,I love that multimeter .

Well,
i will debate with you on this by creating a new thread one day ,For the next 1.5 months i am damn busy ,Good bad ugly i have all multimeters more then 100 labs put together ,Reason i am a multimeter collector ,I would also suggest some books to everyone .

Pepe,
what does exactly get damaged on hdd surface when a good donor pcb is mounted on a toasted preamp?
Would it kill only SA in a way that it would be impossible to access into UA, or do you mean that also UA gets phisically damaged?

Heads would act as a degausser or would scratch the surface?

Well,
With a Toasted preamp , a new pcb can get toasted too in less then 25% out of 100,Nothing happens to the data ever
