Not another "OMG I dropped my HDD what should I do" thread

October 5th, 2022, 6:03

Hello forum.

As the title suggests, I dropped my WD 2T green from a height of 70 cm (measured). The drive was fully powered off. The impact surface was laminated floor.

Now I understand the following things:

* Typical mechanical internal drives could withstand an overload of 250G.

* I probably should have it backed up immediately.

The thing is, I powered it up and scanned with MHDD for 2.5% from the first LBA. So far everything seems normal. It's green series so it's used very lightly mainly for storage purposes. I also can read it properly under win10.

My question is, how much trouble am I in? Will there be tons of sectors completely messed up? Or since the scan and the read under win10 being normal suggests the mechanical integrity is largely intact so I may be even able to get away with it this time?

If it started OK and you were able to scan the first whatever percent, the surfaces probably weren't affected, heads stayed in park position, so probably no surface damage occured. You may be able to use it for the next years and it may die on you tomorrow, so backing up important stuff is a good idea.
Spindle bearing may develop problems because of this impact.

Got it, thank you!

I'm glad things aren't completely in hell... yet.
