Victoria HDD/SSD app, experts need small help plz

May 5th, 2023, 17:28

So I got this 2tb WD MY Book that I'm trying to rehab from bad sectors,
won't allow to get itself initialized or formatted ( cyclic redundancy error, chkdsk won't run ) ,
I got data off of it ok, now messing with it trying to rehab.

I ran Victoria in IGNORE mode - found UNCR cyclic redundancy up to about 10Gb at start of disk.

Then I read that to rehab those sectors write zeroes to them, ok did so in Victoria in ERASE mode,
while it was writing to disk it reported success on every line.
Then ran in IGNORE again to verify - nope, same UNCR error.

Then I read that may want to try REMAP option ( bad sector relocation ), so did so over same lba span,
again each line reporting successful relocation.
Then ran in IGNORE again to verify - nope, same UNCR error

+ both of those options report write->read verify ok as I observe it going thru sectors.

Is this app for real, or am I doing it the wrong way?

What's the proper sequence to rehab the drive in Victoria or in general ?
In my understanding it's":
- wipe ( write zeros )
- relocate / remap bad sectors
- partition
- low level format

I tried WD lifeguard disk wipe - but I did that before Victoria.

This one?

"OK, I finally successfully recovered all data from this f-ed up 3.5 2TB WD MY BOOK ESSENTIAL"

Yes, that same WD 2TB MY BOOK ESSENSIAL one, got the data off it, minimal errors and loss, but what's going on with Victoria ?
( nothing running in background, win 10 ssd os )
the goal here being - try to write zeros ( WIPE ) to disk and see it can then be partitioned and formatted.
it's unexceptionally slow writing/erasing in Victoria, or any other widows soft including WD own lifeguard WIPE utility,
we are talking days to zero out disk in one pass, straight zero writing, days !!!

Will try diskpart clean all, supposed to do 320Gb per hour, ie about 6 hours to wipe 2tb drive.
If that fails then switching to dd in linux to wipe to see if it goes faster.

BTW, anybody, what's the fastest way to zero-wipe the disk, nothing fancy or extra, just 0 write to 2tb disk in one pass ?
Should I shuck it to bypass WD sata-to-usb adapter board ?

What makes you think such a drive can be revived and put back to use?

Not sure that I can revive it, from my research - after data is recovered there are 3 options for the disk 1. toss ( destroy platters ) and 2. refurbish ( revive, restore, repair, rehab, refresh, reset, fix, cure etc ) and 2a. keep using or 2b. sell or 3. keep for parts

I have tried write_zeros with Victoria, WD lifeguard wipe, HHDScan and in linux with dd, ddrescue - all points to the fact that disk write speed is 2-3mbs - so the disk is very slow.

As, I have figured out refurbish procedure as: acquire specialized soft + firmware reset + g list to p list move + smart reset + translator reset + format with g and p lists and I should be done and then test the disk again.

I'm learning
