Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello,
I am new here and wanted to ask for some help please.
A friend asked me to take a look at a WD MyBook1.
It smelled smoky and would not run.
I took it apart and found that the WD5000AACS would not function even plugged into an external caddy.
I spent some time looking thru the forums about this and I removed the pcb from the hdd and found that the D4 was shorted and the ZERO ohm resistor was open.
I am guessing that an incorrect power supply was used and either over voltage or reverse polarity was applied to the hdd.
I am fearing that the only way to recover the data, if it is possible, is to send the hdd to a professional?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Michael

This is the usual result:
Catastrophic failures in Western Digital PCBs:
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=1119In your case you should be able to replace the PCB, after transferring the ROM at U12, if it exists. Hdd-parts.com is one PCB supplier who will include a ROM transfer in the price.

Thank you for the response and the links!
I will get in touch with hdd-parts.com on Monday.
Hopefully a pcb swap will allow me to recover her data.
Regards
Michael
