Reallocated decreasing !!

July 4th, 2023, 12:46

Did anyone ever come across this:

RAW value for attribute 05 is decreasing over time after initially increasing while subjected to a surface scan using Victoria.

Drive is a ST2000DM008 which is SMR if I am not mistaken.

SMART one hour later

I am guessing / it almost seems like initially reallocated sector is 'unmapped' from spare and reassigned by the translator? Could this be what's happening?

Seagate can degrade by itself and can also cure itself!!! Amazing drives!!!

Is there any document to read into this further? Since when do they do that?

I saw this on a Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 3.BAJ and thought it's an error or ghosts...

No, I mean to ask. It's an observation which flabbergasted me TBH.

I found nothing in the manual (damn, 2006 is long time ago) : https://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/sup ... 24667b.pdf

 https://superuser.com/questions/1793683 ... -went-down
Nothing in the comments from the hardwareluxx.de thread (german is my native language)

What if it's just cheating, silently grabbing spares to avoid errors anywhere to avoid replacement in the end? The whole SMR-thing and not declaring it alone was a crime. In the beginning people felt the rip-off and wanted to get rid of these disks, which even were sold in external enclosures without info at all.

I never buy new disks, so I don't know if this would be normal procedure or legit:
Seagate customer Support told me that I would need to scan my drive with their Seagate Sea Tools and if it fails it I would get a replacement. Hard Drive passed but still it has Reallocated sectors count 100 in which means that more will come.

Is there anyway to get replacement even through it passed sea tools ?

This could be one of those models that writes SMART data to a cyclic buffer in ROM at 1 hourly intervals. However, I can't see what affect that would have except maybe to complicate the SMART data gathering process.

New to me, do you have any links for me Franc where I can read up on this?

No, I don't have an account there. I found your thread via search engine.

Similar behaviour for same model (ST2000DM008)?

HD Sentinel should be able to tell him which attributes were involved.
