1,000 $ Reward for Disk Unlock Procedure (DKR5C,DKR5D,DKS5E)

November 19th, 2023, 14:04

Hi Guys,

I am offering 1,000 USD reward to anyone who can guide me on how to unlock the below disks.

DKS5E - Seagate
DKR5C - Hitachi
DKR5D - HGST

These disks came from a Hitachi Storage and seem to be Firmware locked. I can format these disks but any attempt on writing data to disks or configuring them in RAID fails.

I just want to change the firmware on the disks to generic firmware so that they can be used in standard servers.

Its possible to do this without any special hardware. A Russian Guru was able to do this remotely for me using Niagra but unfortunately the unlocking service fee he charges is multiple times higher then the disk cost. So does not make financial sense for me anymore.

Hope someone can solve this puzzle.

$1000 will buy you several refurbished SAS drives, or am I missing something?

Guessing they have more drives and want to do it themselves.

I already have lots of these disks. I am more interested in learning how to do it myself.

Willing to pay the fee to anyone who can invest time to guide me how to do this myself.

Yes. You are correct. I am interested in learning how to do this myself.

Willing to compensate anyone for his time who is willing to guide me.

Niagara is the disk utility that the last guy used to unlock the firmware on the disks remotely.

Hopefully, this script will dump the firmware modules from your Hitachi/HGST drives:

https://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?p=23671#p23671

Code:
#!/bin/bash

for i in {0..255}
do
   j="$(printf '%02x' $i)"
   sg_raw -r 1M -b /dev/sg1 3c 01 $j 00 00 00 10 00 00 00 > ./modules/0x$j.bin
done

While I currently possess numerous copies of these disks, my primary interest lies in acquiring the knowledge and skills to undertake the process independently. I am prepared to compensate anyone who is willing to invest the time and expertise required to guide me through the steps of mastering this task on my own. The goal is not just to obtain the end result but to understand the intricacies and nuances involved in the process. If you possess the expertise and are open to sharing your insights, I am ready to discuss a mutually agreeable arrangement.

That was my primary objective for starting this thread. But so far no one seems to be interested or has the know how of how to do this.

Or they do, and they want to capitalise on it like your Russian Guru.

There isn't many secrets that involve "simple when you know how" so can't really blame them.

I am guessing someone will get the same service, and run Wireshark, then the secret will start to filter to others.
