Seagate ST3802110A - clicking and cannot set new partition

June 5th, 2024, 6:27

Hi

Finally decided to post about this drive here. Its an Seagate ST3802110A certified repaired HDD (Barracuda 7200.9 80GB IDE). After starting, the heads click for around 4 seconds, then stop and so on. Disk is seen by BIOS and Windows, but I can't do anything with it. Formatting the RAW partition (and trying to set a new partition) hangs disk management. SMART shows around 10k reallocated sectors, HDTUNE shows bad sectors in a repeating pattern. Pressing on the PCB I can sometimes reset the drive. Any ideas if this drive can be saved to somewhat usable state? I know the 7200 series and above drives are total garbage, but I don't want to get of it now.

no point putting any efforts in this drive, the unit itself does not worth wasting any time on it. Save it for parts, if any.

Since I finally got a high quality TTL adaptor I decided to give this drive a shot (I need some IDE drives since I only got 10GB ones and they are kinda expensive where I live). After initializing, i get the following errors (Add To Pending and LBA changes, so from my understanding the drive generates bad sectors)
CE Log ErrCode=37 LBA=18757 Type=5 Add To Pending 18757

I can get to the different levels, but I'm getting "Command Inactive - No VALID Cert Code Detected" errors when I type some commands eg. V40 on T> prompt or N1 on 2>prompt. Any ideas how to make the bad sector checks stop? Also, I was wrong about 10k reallocated sector count. Its 1434 on SMART 05 and 1393 on both C5 and C6.

This HDD is not an F3 architecture! (F3 >= 7200.11)
Fly swatter techniques from the Internet are not suitable!
If you want to fix it, study self-scans of classic barracudas.
If you need data, give the HDD to a DR specialist.
Error processing for them is disabled by editing the APP.
Cert is loading Ctrl R ...

Cert have been loaded by CTRL+R. Although now I'm getting "CE Log ErrCode=43 LBA=102 Type=6Not handled software path:" errors after some time. Also forgot to mention there are just bad blocks everywhere on the scan and errors:
13:19:22 : Starting Reading, LBA=0..156301487, sequential access, timeout 10000ms
13:19:56 : Block 0 Error #1E3

13:30:20 : Block 1536 Error #79
13:32:04 : Block 1792 Error #79
Didin't bother running the scan in victoria as it was just taking so long. I think its just too far gone at this point...

Mind sending me some links to the self-scan docs and how to edit the APP? Couldn't find anything about pre F3 ARCH drive commands and the APP. Theres no data on it, I think.

Can the same be applied to an momentus 7200.2 which has the same issue as this barracuda?

Although, smart says this one is "BAD", so I think its just a goner. Whats weird is on this drive HDD regenerator accually tries to regen bad sectors while on the IDE seagate it just says drive not ready.
