Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Good morning,
I have a WD My Book Duo 28TB with 2 Slots, I tried to connect it a few months ago but it doesn't show in the system,
Im not familiar with hard drive problems, but I tried some recovery software to recover the data but the software couldn't see the Hard drive either, is there anything to do, my whole life is there
and I don't know where to start and what are the right steps
thanks in Advance, I hope to find something here

Is it configured as a 14TB RAID 1 or a 28TB RAID 0?
Can you attach each drive to a SATA port inside your computer and provide us with a SMART report?

there is to few information on the 3 softwares in the article, in the CrystalDiskInfo the app didn't detect the hard drive at all, about your question if it is set as 14TB or 28TB I don't know how to get this information.
thanks for the replay

You need to remove each drive from the Duo and test it inside your computer. Keep a record of the drive order inside the Duo.
Since you were unable to answer my RAID 0/1 question, I suspect that you would probably be best advised to engage a pro service.

I did some readings about your questions, the drive was configured as RAID 1, both Hards were combined to one volume of 28TB, I will connect the drives separately to the PC and see what reports I can get,
one more thing maybe it is important, I removed the hards from the box and inserted them in another box, and didn't work,
and I replaced the hards from the other box into the first book (the hards that are not damaged from the 2nd book duo) and they worked

Use direct SATA cables to your PC.

Do the drives spin up?

No, I don't think so, no sound is coming from the hards

Then it appears that your drives have PCB faults. Can you remove the PCBs and provide photos of the component side?

If it were RAID 1, then it would be only 14GB volume which is a mirrored disk and only one needs to be recovered.
If it's RAID 0, then it would be 28GB and makes it harder as both will need to be recovered.
Some WD White Label large TB drives can't be plugged into normal PC PSU and need the 3.3v pin on the SATA power connector masked to work..
I don't know if this is the issue here, as Fzabkar says, it sounds like the PCBs are faulty.

Check the TVS diodes and fuses.

Thanks for the help, fzabkar.
A friend of mine tested the components based on your article and confirmed issues with the diodes and one of the fuses. On one of the PCBs, the 12V diode is completely missing.
Unfortunately, my friend is not qualified to replace them, so he suggested purchasing new PCBs. Based on your experience, are there any parts that need to be transferred from the old PCBs to the new ones? and is buying new PCBs is a good idea in the first place?
Thanks again for your help. You've given me hope, and I can't thank you enough.

It would be much safer to replace the diodes and/or fuses rather than transferring the ROMs.
Which components were faulty? This is important, as this will point to the power source as the culprit. If you continue to use the same power source, you may damage other HDDs.

Drives are fine. Need to isolate 3,3V pin (common for wd/hgst removed from ...)
After that, need to decrypt data-space (JM561 bridge) and assemble virtual raid. Raid1 or raid0

I'd be taking it to a pro if the data is that important.

UFS explorer Pro, licensed version can do that.
