Hitachi deskstar HDS728040PLA320 - missing R3, no spin

November 1st, 2024, 5:56

Hi
While back I got an Hitachi deskstar HDS728040PLA320 drive. Powered it on but was greeting with nothing. No spin, no beeps. Doing a visual inspection I found an missing capacitor near motor controller and an R3 resistor which almost broke off (R3 is near R63). While trying to resolder that R3 I accidentally lost it. It was the no markings type so I can't go on google and find a picture of the PCB. Buying a new board isn't an option. Anybody knows what the specs of R3 might be?

@kotel, if you can upload clear, hi-res photos of both sides of the PCB, especially in the affected area, I may be able to work out a suitable resistance value.

Well, after replacing a missing cap near the motor controller, the disk spun up but now it is clicking. I think it may be the problem with that resistor being wrong resistance cause it connects to a pin on the heads assembly. (I measured the one near it and replaced it). Pictures in attachments.

Don't mind the resistor missing (it broke off). It was an I believe 4.7k (the THT resistor soldered near it is the spec of the one that broke off before I got around playing with the drive).
