Maxtor Diamondmax 10 6V080E0 SATA II - no spin

November 4th, 2024, 13:43

Hi

While back I got this Maxtor Diamondmax 10 6V080E0 drive. Replaced the missing caps and one resistor which I believe is R508 (used the same resistance as R302). After that there wasn't any life out of it. I can hear the PSU having more load, but thats about it. Both of the protection diodes are okay. Noticed that on the 3.3v pad on PCB (near L503) is showing only around 1 volt. There's also an 0 ohm resistor labeled r531. Not sure if its broken or mean to be that way... I am at a loss here cause I can't for the life of me figure out whats wrong with the drive.

I didn't know what type it was and it is showing continuity but thanks for confirming it wasn't an 1r5

Okay the coil was replaced but no go. Forgot to mention that 2v line is gone, atleast on the testing pad for it. There's also a cracked resistor (shown on attached pciture) which shows 0 ohms, although Maxtor just had to use unmarked ones so now I can't tell what resistance it is.

And now I see more resistors with exposed insides... And these drives HAVE to be rare where I live so now I can't get another PCB to measure the resistors.

Replaced the one marked red with an 100ohm resistor cause it was showing 0 ohms and r531 with an 100 ohm too but still no spin. Any ideas?

Flipping heak... That PCB is toast, just replace with a new one, source it outside country or something, that's completely had it.

For fun I've replaced the PCB from an older IDE model aaand... it kinda works? Heads click the same as on that old 18GB IDE drive, which would mean one of the power controllers are indeed broken (see a smal crack on one of them). Welp I'll try to fix this diamondmax PCB up and maybe it will work.

You will need to save the BIOS chip and get a new PCB as close to the original as you can get. I'm not sure what numbers you need, but its on the PCB somewhere.
