SMART shows GOOD, but everything else reads BAD BAD BAD BAD

December 13th, 2024, 17:06

Dear experts!

I have a WD drive that's showing Unknown, Not initialized. SMART shows GOOD, but trying to read anything shows BAD BAD BAD BAD...

What does this mean? and what can I try to get data off this drive?

TIA!

Your Seek Error Rate has hit the threshold. That, together with the inability to read any sectors, suggests that your drive has serious internal problems.

Thank you for your reply.
What would my next steps be? Would a board change or head replacement help?

You send it to someone that doesn't have to ask these things.

Sorry, I don't know.

I don't understand what is happening. Normally when the servo system is seriously dysfunctional, one would expect read errors, but your drive hasn't recorded any, and it is still able to read the firmware area on the platters. Perhaps a data recovery pro might first try a replacement PCB to rule it out??
