Changing the serial number of the Seagate HDD - CRC

January 2nd, 2025, 10:40

Hi, I need to change the serial number of my hard drive. I have an old PC in which the disk has reached the end of its life. A certain program for which I purchased a license years ago works only with a specific disk serial number. The company that wrote the program no longer exists, no support, no way to regenerate activation code.
The disk in which I would like to change S/N is Seagate ST250DM000. I read the flash with a programmer and found 2 places where the serial number is stored and changed to new serial number:
Code:
Serial number location 1 - Block(h): 10054-1005B
Serial number location 2 - Block(h): 1869A-186A1

I have opened modified rom (with new serial number) in F3 ROM Explorer

After recalculate CRC for DL_CAPM and DL_SAPM I have made corrections in ROM
Code:
CRC for DL_CAPM  - Block(h): 10254-10255
CRC for DL_SAPM  - Block(h): 1A67C-1A67D

I have opened ROM with correct CRC again in F3 ROM Explorer and everything looks OK

Flashed ROM but HDD want to spin. Does the F3 support this model of HDD (incorrect CRC algorytm) ? Some other steps needed? Any suggestions?

I can't see any attachments.

but HDD want to spin

I'm guessing you meant "but HDD doesn't want to spin".

I haven't heard about changing the algorithm.
Connecting to the disk via a terminal would be more informative.
But either an error occurred while editing or the flash chip died (possibly 1.8V).

Yes, sorry for the spelling mistake.
I added attachments.

The flash chip is ok, I have flashed the factory ROM to it again and it works.

Try this:

Yes, F3RomExplorer complains, but my CRC tool is OK with it.

Your file contain factory S/N: 9VYG3C11 (included in my file: factory_rom.BIN)
Second file (new_sn_crc_ok.BIN) contain modified new S/N: 9QZAWN8B + CRC modifications that I mentioned before in post.

I have added new attachment.
Factory ROM where I replaced only S/N: from 9VYG3C11 to 9QZAWN8B

Sorry, I pasted the modified CRC into the wrong CAP. I didn't touch the SAP because I'm not sure about one component. I suspect that it should be enough to edit the CAP. Anyway, F3RomExplorer is happy with my latest edit.

SN in CAP and SAP has been changed.
But Frank is most likely right. A change in CAP is enough for the passport.
And my changes may be of interest to him.

I have flashed EPROM with your file. So far so good, drive spins up, data is accessible. I will do more tests. Thank you for your time.
