WD1001FALS-00E3A0 Total Written Bytes?

January 12th, 2025, 5:20

Hello,

I have a WD Black WD1001FALS-00E3A0 and would like to know the total amount of bytes written to this drive, but CrystalDiskInfo or other similar programs do not show this information. I have originally posted this question in the WD forum and was told that the drive tracks the amount of total written bytes, but does not show it to the user.

I bought this drive in 2010 and I would really like to know how many bytes were written to it over the last 15 years. Could you please help me?

Download the WD Marvel Repair Tool and dump the SA firmware modules:

Then run my WD SMART tool against the modules numbered from 0x20 to 0x26. Some will be empty templates, while others will have current SMART data.

I was able to dump the SA firmware modules, there was no module 0x20 though, only 0x21 to 0x26.

Module 21 shows 80.8 TB written, so it looks like I overestimated the amount of data written to the drive. Thanks for answering my original question in the WD forum and for your help here.

I have also checked the "Unhide hidden attributes" SMART option in WD Marvel and there it only shows 78.6 TB written. I have attached screenshots of both:
0x24 C2B0 76DB => 157,885,167,323 x 512 => 80,837,205,669,376 => 80.8 TB
0x23 C2B0 76D8 => 153,590,200,024 x 512 => 78,638,182,412,288 => 78.6 TB

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't aware that the demo version of WDMarvel had been updated to report the hidden attributes.
