Help w/ identifying faulty components in WD20SP2X-22UA7T0

September 10th, 2025, 18:07

Hello everyone!

Not long ago my secondary HDD stopped working due to (I believe) electrical failure.

(I suspect this is the case due to 1)drive is not being noticed by the BIOS 2) the lack of any sounds after failure, and 3) sometime later I discovered a loose cable in one of my PC fans and 4) had to replace the PSU)

I didn't have backups at the time so I've been trying really hard to learn about hdds and find recovery options.

I found this topic in another forum which seemed promising / worth trying, it talks about identifying if the components tasked with defending for electrical damages (tvs or fuses) managed to take the surges, and mentions removing those to retrieve back the data from the disks -> https://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=86

However, I don't really understand the bit where it says to test the preamp before checking the other components. It shows some testing points and a table, but I'm not sure where those would correspond on my device?

I have attached some pictures of the PCB for reference. Any help would be really really appreciated

Was the "S" fuse open and the "SUA" diode shorted?

thanks for replying! I believe you mean these correct?

I got these readings in continuity, which I think mean the S is open, but I'm not sure if the TVS is also shorted? (it has continuity, and resistence of 0.18ohms in 20K scale)

(sorry, not sure if my previous post went through, if it did and it's just not been aproved yet please disregard this one)
