WD Gold/Ultrastar 16TB, does it support Media Cache?

May 20th, 2026, 0:20

I'm looking at the 16TB models of

* WD Gold
* WD Ultrastar 550
* WD Ultrastar 555

And am curious if any of them support Media Cache or Media Cache Plus? I can only find mentions of OptiNAND and Armour Cache (none of them support either).

Additionally I was wondering if anyone had any information on what all of these technologies do and how they differ from each other.

I've read mention of the Media Cache here https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/co ... 0/ocry576/ and have seen mention of ArmourCache and OptiNAND on the product pages and specification PDF's at Western Digital's website but haven't been able to find an actual break down of what any of the 4 technologies do.

Thanks,

Modern hard disks now come with more cache RAM which helps media playback and generally also helps general performance.

Media players tend to also cache the content as PC RAM capacity has grown considerably in recent years.

Most hard disks do not use NAND flash memory as this tends to wear out faster than the disk. This is why RAM cashes are used. Still there are the odd hybrid disk out there,
