ExcelStor 80GB

June 13th, 2005, 5:25

Hi guys. Is there anybody having experience with ExcelStor drives. The name is Callisto 80GB, model is J880, Firmware is PF20A218. It cannot initialize correctly (knocking sound). The PCBA seems like one taken from a Hitachi/IBM drive. Could I use PC3K or any othere SW to repair the SA of this drive? Is there eny loader for such a drive?
Any suggestion is welcome.

i think that Excelstor are IBM refurbished units. Now i have no experience in repairing IBM drives, i know they are a bit trickier, but i think you should try using utilities for IBM 80G.

Most ExcelStor drives I have come across have been remanufactured IBM drives - they normally take an old IBM / Hitachi and cut it.

I recently came across an ExcelStor that was a remanufactured Western Digital.

Either way, ExcelStor has to be the most unreliable drive on the market. I think people who buy them in order to save 20% of the cost of a sensible drive needs their head read.

Good business for us, though...
