Hardware ECC corrections - how many are bad?

July 1st, 2005, 0:20

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB drive that may have an issue. Basically, I have been doing all sorts of tests on it since it was very slow to open in Directory Opus and ActiveSMART threw a SMART error.

In my testing, I've seen no indication of SMART failure anywhere but in that program, however, I have seen rather high (C3) Hardware ECC Recovered -- 12313 right now, varying from 8k - 12k. This is compared to my other Maxtor drive, a 60GB that has around 500 in that value.

Is this enough for me to try and RMA the drive, or does it mean nothing?
